“I have used it as a dressing in numerous lacerated and contused wounds, particularly of the fingers and toes, and have found that it would relieve pain almost instantly in lacerated wounds, and, in a very short time, healthy granulations could be seen in every wound. In almost every instance there was an entire absence of pus, which shows the remarkable antiseptic properties of this product. Have also had marvelous results with old, sluggish ulcers, in which cases an abundance of healthy granulations would soon take the place of the dirty, grayish deposit, seen in these cases. During my time using Apinol I have found to my entire satisfaction that it is the best surgical dressing that I know of. In burns the pain is almost instantly gone. “-

REMEDY FOR EVERYTHING STILL SOOTHES, WITHOUT INCENTIVES

Column: JIM SCHLOSSER

Moving a company in business for a 100 years must have been an arduous undertaking for the new owner, Cindy Simmons.

Surely, Greensboro officials begged her to change her mind. Surely, the county or city offered tax incentives for her to stay.
Nope. It took only a modest-sized truck to move the Apinol Corp. from Greensboro to a town near Birmingham, Ala., in August 2003, during the company's centennial year.

No one pleaded for her to keep Apinol in Greensboro, where it had been since 1967 after relocating from Wilmington, where it was founded in 1903.

Apinol's departure is only now being recognized because Simmons called the News & Record recently to say the company's one and only product, Apinol, is still healing people across the country.

The product was the idea of Hugh McRae and members of one of Wilmington's most prominent families.

The McRaes boasted that

Apinol soothed and healed paper cuts and other lacerations, insect and chigger bites, chapped lips, sunburn and other types of burns.

It relieved pains in the joints. It would cure whatever ailed Fido the dog, or Chessie the cat, or in rural areas, the livestock in the barnyards.

The McRaes warned people not to take Apinol internally, but some people did. One favorite method was to coat Apinol on chewing gum. Toothaches disappeared.

Through the years under

different owners, the company

accumulated file folders of unsolicited testimonials.

A nurse in Charlotte wrote, "I raised my children on

Apinol. It is the most soothing and effective antiseptic I've ever used. In fact, it is all I ever use."

As a former owner of Apinol, Warren Bass of Greensboro no longer needs to extol its seemingly magic qualities. But he does.

"It will cure everything except heartache," says Bass, who bought the company from a neighbor, Ted Whitson, who in turn bought it from Hugh McRae II, grandson of the founder.

Hugh Morton, the photographer, owner of Grandfather Mountain and grandson of Hugh McRae, was raised

on Apinol and says, "If

you've ever used it, you're

a believer."

His daughter, Judy Morton of Greensboro, says she can still hear her grandmother shouting, "Put some Apinol on it," each time she had a nick or an itch.

The McRaes still speak those words when medical emergencies arise. Hugh McRae II of Wilmington says he stepped the wrong way into a golf course bunker on a recent Sunday and pulled a muscle in his left calf.

"I rubbed Apinol on it two or three times Sunday night and the pain was gone Monday morning," he says.

McRae says the family started making Apinol to increase the revenues of the family enterprises, which in 1903 included coastal farms and nurseries, land development at Wrightsville Beach and in western North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain.

The family chose a simple practical name for the concoction. Apinol is an abbreviation of sorts for "a pine oil" product.

Hugh McRae II says in southeastern North Carolina, where the woods are full of loblolly and longleaf pines, the benefits of rubbing pine oil on whatever hurt had been well known since early days.

The McRaes marketed Apinol in North and South Carolina and Virginia. For awhile, the company produced Apinol Soap, aimed at mechanics who found regular suds not tough enough to remove oil and grease stains.

As people moved from the Carolinas and Virginia, they took Apinol with them and introduced it to neighbors, who ordered bottles from the McRaes.

Hugh McRae II says the Boston Red Sox used it to ease sore muscles during spring training.

"It was a nice money maker," he says of the product.

And overhead was low. A Wilmington woman who worked for the McRaes watched over the making and marketing of Apinol. Subsequent owners also ran it as a one or two-person operation.

At one point, the McRaes considered mass producing Apinol in concert with the Richardson family of Greensboro, who owned Vick Chemical Co., makers of Vicks VapoRub and Vicks Cough Drops. But the Depression killed that idea.

In a weak moment in the 1960s, Hugh McRae II says he sold Apinol to Ted Whitson of Greensboro. Using Hercules Pine Oil, Whitson made Apinol in a building on Patterson Street near the Greensboro coliseum.

Whitson sold the company to Warren Bass, who was assisted by John Bates of Greensboro. Bates eventually bought the company.

Simmons says she contacted Bates two years ago to a buy a case of Apinol because she couldn't find any in Alabama. When Bates expressed an interest in selling the company, a deal was struck.

She grew up on Apinol in Roanoke, Va., where her father, a mechanic with Norfolk & Western Railroad, had long used Apinol for cuts and aches suffered on the job.

Her father later left the railroad and moved to Alabama, where he founded a business that rebuilds turbo chargers and fuel pumps. Simmons now runs that business, as well as Apinol.

"If I put the time into it, it would be better," she says of Apinol's sales.

She doesn't release figures, but says Apinol makes money. She hopes to make more.

She plans to advertise the product and be more aggressive with marketing. Now, she relies on repeat mail-order business. Some independent drug stores, including those that belong to the N.C. Mutual Drug Consortium, carry

Apinol.

The Eckerd chain used to stock Apinol. But previous owners Bass and Bates say chains don't like products such as Apinol because a bottle lasts an eternity. Bates gets his from Burton's, an independent pharmacy on Lindsay Street downtown.

The McRae family still does its part to spread the word about Apinol. On a trip to

England, Hugh McRae II

presented a bottle to a woman in Britain's aristocracy.

"She now swears by it," he says.

"She sent me a letter recently and asked if I would please send her another bottle."
